Now I’ve been invited to many parties in my lifetime, but this weekend proved a first for me when I was invited to a Christmas shindig at Kaffibarinn (arguably Reykjavik’s coolest bar) by non other than Reykjavík’s own top dog. ‘Skuggi (Shadow) Hákonarson’, as he’s known in Icelandic, is a familiar furry face at Kaffibarinn and very popular with locals and tourists alike – he even has his own Facebook account so all his friends can keep up-to-date with his doggie business. Skuggi, with his beautiful, shinny, black coat, a winning toothy smile and qualifications in being adorable, has been resident employee of the month for a record five years at Kaffibarinn, and in recognition of his loyal service to the establishment a photo of this handsome hound hangs in place of honour on the wall behind the bar. Apart from partying with his friends at Kaffibarinn, he loves more than anything to get some exercise, especially with his best pal Aegir, who joins him regularly for a trip around Heidamörk to enjoy the parklife! He loves to run so much in the beautiful Icelandic countryside that I heard he once ran a whopping 80km in just one day. So, if you’re planning a trip to Reykjavik, don’t forget to stop by Kaffibarinn and say hello to Skuggi the dog, apart from his native Icelandic doggie talk, he also understands English and Czech. He’s apparently quite the activist too – like Jón Gnarr he’s an active campaigner for LGTB rights!
