Chess tournament by Roman Gerasymenko

We’re currently in the Laugardalur Sports Hall and Exhibition Centre in Reykjavik where a chess tournament is being held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Bobby Fischer’s legendary win over world champion Boris Spassky, which was hosted here in Reykjavik in 1972.  A league of over 250 clever, Icelandic kids are now competing in the tournament for various prizes. In the background there’s a screening with a montage of newspaper clippings and old footage of the event which was publicized at the time as a “Cold War confrontation”.

The brain power in this room is overwhelming, I just sat down at a table for fun and got beat by a 10 year old –  I’m definitely blowing the dust off my chess set when I get home!
