Find out what’s open and when during the holidays!
The run up to Christmas is a great time to visit Reykjavík and since the majority of shops and services extend their opening hours during this period, you’ll have plenty of time to squeeze in a bit of Christmas shopping between your Northern Lights excursions and day trips to the countryside. Note that things get a bit quieter after lunchtime on Christmas Eve, which is the day Icelanders traditionally celebrate Christmas, so shops tend to close around 12-2pm on the 24th December and stay closed until 26 -27 December.
Those spending Christmas in Reykjavík will be relieved to know that there are still a few bars and restaurants open for business on the red-letter days, including favourite hangouts such as Café Babalu (open on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) and Slippbarinn at Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina. For more information on what’s open and when over the holidays check out this list compiled by Visit Reykjavik — it’s a great resource and well worth bookmarking before you set off on your travels around Reykjavík. Restaurants tend to fill up rather quickly around Christmas and New Year’s Eve, so best to book in advance. Happy Holidays!
