When visiting Reykjavik I often get jealous of the arctic terns and other birds I see flying above. They must have it good with the nearby mountains to explore, clean air to breathe and fish aplenty in the harbour to torment. So when I was given the opportunity to take a helicopter ride, my first ever, over Reykjavik, I was flying high.
As I walked out onto the airfield, I felt instantly ten times cooler seeing the sleek black helicopter that would be my ride. For those of you who were around in the 80s in America or Canada, this was like a 2011 version of Airwolf with a cool as ice pilot to match. After he chatted briefly with me and the other avian wannabes, we took to the skies.
I don’t want to spoil the whole experience, but two things that really struck me were that Reykjavik is extremely colourful from above and the city is a geothermal playground. I had noticed the city’s colourful rooftops before, but from above together they take on a whole new beauty. Kind of like a Tetris puzzle on a night out. And I had heard that Reykjavik was full of geothermal springs and valleys, but when you get up above it, you cannot help notice this. Steam seeping and in some cases surging from the earth seemed to be everywhere!
