It was an absolute privilege to be invited to Langholtskirkja church to listen to the impressive Mozart Requiem at Midnight, which is performed annually by the Óperukórinn in Reykjavík (Opera Choir of Reykjavík) together with the Reykjavík Symphony Orchestra. The event has become a seasonal tradition for us and one we look forward to every year. Conducted by Iceland’s much-loved tenor, Garðar Cortes Snr., the concert, which featured four of Iceland’s top opera singers: Þóra Einarsdóttir (soprano) Sigríður Ósk Kristjánsdóttir (mezzo-soprano) Garðar Thór Cortes (tenor) and Viðar Gunnarsson (bass) was arranged to coincide with the anniversary of Mozart’s passing at 1am on December 5th. The exact moment was poignantly symbolised during a silent pause in the goose-bump-inducing Lacrimosa, when Garðar turned to extinguish a single candle. Below are some photos of the wonderful ensemble, who gave us all a truly memorable evening.
