Not everyone was watching the football on Monday night. Some people visited Viðey Island instead to watch the illumination of the Imagine Peace Tower in celebration of world peace and John Lennon’s birthday. For the first time since it was installed back in 2007, Yoko Ono didn’t appear in person and instead delivered a message, together with her son Sean, via Periscope live link from Höfði House in Reykjavík. The event, which is overseen annually by Visit Reykjavík, unfolded with some music by a local choir followed by a speech from Mayor of Reykjavík. The powerful beam from the Imagine Peace Tower will light up the skyline in Reykjavik until December the 8th – the anniversary of John Lennon’s death. Here are some of our favourite photos from the event. Click to enlarge.
