Congratulations to the newly-formed Icelandic band Between Mountains, who just won the Icelandic Music Experiments competition. The contest, which was held on Saturday night, is a major musical outlet with great prizes for upcoming Icelandic bands and attracts young musicians from all around the country. The internationally acclaimed band Monsters of Men won the same title back in 2010, and just like them, Between Mountains will receive free studio time at a top recording studio all the essential support necessary from the music industry to give them every chance of success. As part of their award, the band will be flown to Europe with Icelandair to take part in the Stage Europe Network project. They will also get to perform at the Iceland Airwaves music festival, which will be on later this year, from 1-5 November.
About Between Mountains
Katla Vigdís and Ásrós Helga, the two talented young ladies from Between Mountains, hail from the Westfjords in Iceland. They formed the band especially to take part in the Iceland Music Experiments less than a month ago, and with a handful of songs – one composed only a few days before the final competition – they managed to win over the judges and become this year’s I.M.E winners.
There were 12 bands in the final competition with many standout acts covering a wide range of different genres; from hip hop and rap to death metal and electronica. Apart from the winning duo, some of our favourite performances were made by Vasi – who stood out with their talented musicians and lead singer playing nu-jazz and 4-hero inspired tunes – and the brilliant Gabríel Ólafs, who captivated us completely with his spellbinding, cinematic piano compositions: he might not have won the music experiments, but you never know, maybe he’ll end up winning a Bafta or Golden Globe. Time will tell.
