After a bright and sunny day yesterday, Iceland Airwaves is kicking off today with a splash in the Reykjavik rain. The festival officially begins tonight, but there are also many off-venue events, starting at 1pm this afternoon with GUS GUS at Kex. After that I’ll be heading to Kaffibarinn where one of my favourite local bands—the Esoteric Gender—is performing at 3pm.

But festival enthusiasts were up much earlier than that this morning, with the first Björk fans lining up at 3am (!) for the last tickets to tonight’s Biophilia concert at Harpa. Nearby café Litli Bóndabærinn kindly provided 50 free espresso coffees to the grateful crowd, who then had to wait until 11am before the tickets began being dished out.

The start of the queue: Björk fans just before Smekkleysa music store opened its doors at 11am to hand out tickets.

…Postscript: The Esoteric Gender didn’t disappoint. Here’s lead singer Lisa Jamesdaughter rockin’ it at Kaffibarinn this afternoon 🙂
